In 350 A.D., Bishop Julius I declared December 25 Christmas Day, a day to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
Centuries before he birth of Jesus, early Europeans held various winter festivals in celebration of light and new life. When winter solstice arrived, people rejoiced in the fact that the darkest days of winter were behind them.
The Norse celebrated Yule in Scandinavia from the winter solstice through January. Germans honored Oden, a pagan god during the winter. In Rome, Saturnalia celebrated to honor Saturn, the god of agriculture.
Christmas became a national legal holiday in 1870. By this time, the holiday had picked up secular traditions such as Santa Claus and gift giving. Today, Christmas is celebrated by millions of people around the world - both Christian and non-Christian.
