Scariest Movies of all Time

The Exorcist - The Exorcist was centered on the actual 1949 Catholic exorcism of a young boy in Mt. Ranier, Maryland. In the film, twelve-year old Regan MacNeil is possessed by a demon and two Catholic priests attempt exorcism. The film, with its big-budget production, brought legitimacy to the horror genre.

Halloween - The mother of all slashers, this classic stands the test of time. Jamie Lee Curtis and friends are stalked by escaped mental patient Michael Myers who turns out to be the brother of the heroine. Carpenter interestingly references the film's predecessor, Hitchcock's "Psycho" in naming the Pleasance character after Marion Crane's lover Sam Loomis and casting Curtis, the daughter of Janet Leigh (Marion Crane) of shower-scene fame.

Psycho - This Hitchcock classic remains a landmark film in the horror genre. The suspenseful tale follows Marion Crane, a secretary charged with depositing $40,000 for her boss and instead embezzles the cash and leaves town. Crane stops for the night at the Bates motel where she meets Norman Bates, an unstable innkeeper with an Oedipal complex. Leigh's famous shower scene is still unnerving, even in the wake of today's slashers. The film is based on Robert Bloch's novel, which was inspired by serial killer Ed Gein.

The Shining - Adapted from the Stephen King novel, this film brings us Nicholson in one of his most famous performances. Writer Jack Torrence brings his family to the isolated Overlook hotel to serve as caretakers during the snowy winter months. The looming, creepy lodge is home to restless spirits who, along with the isolation, transform the novelist into a gleeful madman out to murder his unsuspecting wife and child

Rosemary Baby - A Manhattan couple gets the apartment of their dreams, next door to a coven of witches in this adaptation of the Ira Levin novel. Polanski achieves a chilling intensity as Guy and Rosemary Woodhouse slowly entangle themselves with the Satanic cult.

Nightmare on Elm Street - A product of rape, Freddy Krueger stalks teens in their dreams and kills them in this inventive Craven shocker.

The Omen - Robert and Katherine Thorn adopt a baby from Rome after the loss of their unborn child. Thorn, a high-ranking ambassador, begins to suspect that their son, Damien, is the Antichrist himself.

Carrie - De Palma handles the Stephen King opus deftly in this 1976 chiller. Carrie White (Spacek) is a painfully shy high-schooler with telekinetic powers who is sheltered by her religiously fanatical mother, skillfully played by Piper Laurie. When Carrie's rivals devise a plan to humiliate her at the prom, they get more than they bargained for as she looses her raging powers on them. The cast is bolstered by excellent supporting actors John Travolta, PJ Soles, Amy Irving and William Katt. Followed by the 1999 sequel, "The Rage: Carrie 2".

Alien - When the Nostromo freighter answers a distress call from an alien planet, its crew must survive its hostile inhabitants in this terrifying sci/fi horror.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre - A group of five teens exploring a desecrated graveyard come across the home of a family of cannibals in this Tobe Hooper masterpiece of splatter. Inspired by the activities of the notorious serial killer Ed Gein.

Jaws - Adapted from the novel by Peter Benchley, the Long Island resort town of Amity is besieged by a great white shark during it's summer tourist season.

Silence of the Lambs - Adapted from the Thomas Harris novel. Foster is Clarice Starling, an F.B.I. agent-in-training, sent to barter for insight with a mad-doctor serial killer nicknamed Hannibal the Cannibal. Hopkins provides the trainee with clues about the gender troubled Buffalo Bill, a psychopath who kills women for their skins. The film won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Writing.
